Liam Bowen

Over the course of his two seasons, he has amassed a 20-36 record including a shortened 2020 campaign.   

Bowen, who was on the staff during the team's recent America East Championship run in 2017, is grateful for the opportunity and is excited to help continue the success of the program both on and off the field.

"I have always felt privileged to be a member of UMBC and the baseball program and I am thrilled to continue in this new role," Bowen said. "The university's values have always been in alignment with my own and I am proud to represent our university. I want to thank Tim Hall, Dr. Freeman Hrabowski and Dr. Nancy Young for the opportunity and I look forward to building a program our whole UMBC community can be proud of on the field, in the classroom, and on campus."

Bowen has lead the pitching staff, and served as recruiting coordinator for the Retrievers. During the 2017 season, Bowen's pitching staff surrendered just three runs per game en route to the school's first America East Championship and third NCAA Tournament appearance. Bowen recruited the 2017 America East Rookie of the Year, Christian Torres.

During his tenure at UMBC, Bowen has vastly improved the Retriever pitching staff, lowering the team ERA from 9.01 in 2012 to 3.30 in 2015, the best improvement in the country over that span. The program set many pitching records in 2015, including Conrad Wozniak posting the best single season ERA (1.48) and most strikeouts in a single season (351). During his tenure, two relievers earned First Team All-America East honors, with Wozniak earning Pitcher of the Year and Matt Chanin earning Rookie of the Year.

As a recruiting coordinator, Bowen has helped turn the program around. In 2015, the team won 34 games, the most in a season since 2002. Since 2012, Bowen has recruited and coached four freshman All-Americans, 33 All-Conference selections and 15 All-Rookie team selections.

Bowen came to Baltimore after working as the pitching coach for Lincoln Memorial during the 2011 season. The team's ERA fell from 7.67 the year before to 5.42 in 2011.

Before joining the Division II school, Bowen worked at St. Mary's College (Md.) for four seasons, where the team's ERA dropped from 7.25 in 2006 to 4.60 in 2009.

Bowen earned a bachelor's degree in history from Macalester College in Minnesota in 2006. He was named All-Conference and also selected as the team's most valuable player in 2004.
